Surgery Overview

The TUR of the bladder can be called as the surgical procedure, which is employed both to diagnose the bladder cancer and thus to remove the cancerous tissue from the bladder. This procedure is also known as Transurethral resection for bladder tumor (TURBT). In this procedure the doctors use General anesthesia or spinal anesthesia which is then carried out with a tool cystoscope passing inside the urethra, while the surgeon is then seen using resectoscope for removing the cancer for biopsy and then burn away the cancer cells. At times the bladder cancer can be seen carrying out the same surgery that is carried out as and when required.

What To Expect After Surgery

After the surgery, the surgeon can place catheter in the urethra that helps in stopping the bleeding thus prevent the blockage of the urethra. When you find the bleeding being stopped, the catheter is then removed. For this you may supposed to be there for 1 to 4 days in the hospital. Also, you may be urinating to often after the surgery, but this can improve over the time. You can find stains of urine for up to 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery. the surgeon can ask you to avoid strenuous jobs for about 3 weeks following TUR.

Why It Is Done

The surgery TUR can be used to diagnose, stage, and treat the bladder cancer.

  • Diagnosis. TUR is checks for the presence of cancer inside the bladder.

  • Staging. The process of TUR can help in determining the cancers to check whether it is growing into the bladder wall.

  • Treatment. Once the surgeon finds the cancer, he or she may then remove the same using this procedure

How Well It Works

TUR is among the most effective treatment option for early-stage superficial bladder cancer. It can be even effective for treating advanced cancer that helps in removing the cancerous cells that remain. About 70 percent of the people with early-stage and low-grade superficial bladder cancer can be seen effectively treating the menace of cancer with a TUR.

Risks

Unlike any procedure, TUR is not free from risks, some of these are as under:

  • Bleeding.

  • Bladder infection called cystitis.

  • Perforation over the wall of the bladder.

  • Blood in the Urine called as the hematuria.

  • The Blockage seen over the urethra by blood clots in the bladder.

What To Think About

The treatment with the procedure like TUR can be carried out by chemotherapy or biological therapy. If the superficial bladder cancer is seen recurring, you need the follow-up TURs. About 30 percent of patients with early-stage and high-grade superficial bladder cancer can be easily treated with the surgical procedure TUR, but with the additional chemotherapy or biological therapy for them can be even treated for the same. The bladder cancer can return after this surgery, so repeat TURs can be needed.
